Hi all,
After seeing their presentation at the Melbourne MUM, we've been having a look at Axiom Cyber Shield. Is anyone on here using it and happy to provide some feedback, on-list or off-list? It certainly sounds like a good product, but I only seem to be able to find sales pitch information, not unbiased reviews.

Thanks Ben.
The only 2 units that support 700 / B28 are $1200 and $1700, so yes rather pricy but then so is a luxury motor yacht.
They do look solid.

Hello All,
Thanks for all the generous support provided by you all. It’s very much appreciated.
I need to replace a Teltonika RUT-950 modem router on a luxury motor yacht placed below deck. A 3G and 4G external antenna feed into it from above and it serves a basic AV / WLAN setup.
The yacht is mostly within Sydney harbour but sometimes ventures up the coast as far as Brisbane.
Any suggestions? I know there’s now an MK LTE modem (as of a few months ago) but it doesn’t support B28.

Good morning all,
Just hoping for a sanity check... we have a fleet of RBSXTLTE3-7 units out in the field which have proven to be quite reliable.
Since upgrading one of the units which was previously working fine from 6.39.2 to 6.45.2 for the security fixes (and doing associated firmware upgrade) - the unit is locking up even with no traffic after about 4 hours of uptime. I'm still able to SSH into it and do some tasks (eg issuing "/system reboot" works, albeit takes quite a while to actually do the reboot), but other tasks don't work (eg if I type in "/ping 1" it will reliably and totally lock the SSH session before I can even enter the full IP address).
I've tried a full factory reset of configuration and rebuilding from scratch, as well as going back to 6.44.5 and up to 6.46beta16, the only idea I haven't tried yet is to netinstall it (which is a bit of a challenge as it isn't something I can easily access physically so I'm hoping to avoid that!). I'm not game to upgrade another one of our units to see if it is the unit or the upgrade that is the problem quite yet.
Is there anything obvious with the upgrade path that I've missed perhaps?
Kind regards,
Thomas

Hi All,
Rare that I would want to resort to powerline devices, (power over ethernet). Mikrotik has just released a product that may or may not make it to Australia. In the meantime, I have a 2 bedroom unit built like a bunker that needs wifi access at the rear.
Client has been successfully using EOP for one section of the unit so I’ve plugged in one of the pairs of the EOP devices to test various power outlets and it gets a green light wherever we need wifi so I’m thinking I might find a device that does EOP with built 2.4 for this job.
Simple requirements, most demanding task will be steaming video.
I don’t want to piggyback an AP on the EOP unit as one of them will sit in a hallway and look rather messy.
No option to run cat cable here due to strata laws and building design.
Another option is mesh I guess.
Thoughts? Any recommendations on an EOP unit with built in wifi?

Matt,
I always considered having the right tools for the job is a necessary part
of any ICT tool kit. I have Ethernet testers,
ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+/VDSL/VDSL2/Fibre tester, Cable identifiers/tracers,
Software tools to track, trace and monitor links and everything else Etc...
The pocketethernet is one that I have considered in the past and thought
about purchasing - it is really good kit, but I had decided to utilise Fluke
for testing cabling by renting that kit. The Fluke kit is an expense that is
out of reach and the technology changes regularly - so ROI is a problem.
Keep the sparkies/cablers honest and verify what they are selling you is
legitimate using the pocketethernet device is a great idea.

Kevin

Hi Kev.
I want a tester for troubleshooting when things aren?t going according to
plan or if I want to find out what?s what in a copper wire bird?s nest.
If I want cable laid I get someone else on the job with the right tools.
Looks like the pockethernet will be just right for the job. Too late now
anyway, I bought one. :)

The fluke device I use for structured cabling for customers is the only way
I can guarantee that the backbone of the network is capable and ready. It
also offers peace of mind for the IT department,? but then again I'm not a
sparky, I'm a Structured Cabler, Telco technical Officer of many many years.

Hi Kev.
I want a tester for troubleshooting when things aren’t going according to plan or if I want to find out what’s what in a copper wire bird’s nest.
If I want cable laid I get someone else on the job with the right tools.
Looks like the pockethernet will be just right for the job. Too late now anyway, I bought one. :)

Matt You stated that you use electricians with certification testers..
If they are certifying that the cable is tested for cat 6 / cat 6 E performance then I don't see why youd need a tester.
Or do you mean the sparkies are just performing a wire map test only, and the reason you need another device to ensure what they are doing.
On a side note if I do a job for a customer.
I would be using a fluke to test the performance of the cable, certify the cabling and connection points, as an integral part of the scope of works. The fluke device I use for structured cabling for customers is the only way I can guarantee that the backbone of the network is capable and ready. It also offers peace of mind for the IT department, but then again I'm not a sparky, I'm a Structured Cabler, Telco technical Officer of many many years.

I got my pockethernet yesterday. It only took a few days to ship from Germany.
Thanks for the tips everyone.

I second the Pockethernet, fantastic device for basic troubleshooting.

Hello Folks,
Looking for some advice for a lan cable tester. What are you all using?
Typical jobs for me are home, small business and pubs. Setting up basic MK lans and wlans. I use electricians with cable certification testers wherever possible to lay new cable or replace faulty ones when needed.
I want it to be able to:
1. Check for continuity between 2 data points and get some basic troubleshooting info on faulty cables.
2. survive POE voltage.
2. Be under $500, ideally less if possible.
3. Nice to have but not essential: 3 or so remote units so I can test a few data points at once
My pick at this point is the Ideal Network VDV II Plus for around $330.
Options I?ve found so far:
Ideal networks
VDV II, VDV II Plus and VDV II Pro for $184, $327 and $527
Aegis has:
Pinga Network IP Test Tool for $295
LAN Tester RJ45 for $110
LAN Tester - RJ45, Coax, Tone $160
RS PRO Network Cable Tester F, RJ12, RJ45, 2670 from rs components $475

Back when I was cabling for a living, I had a nice unit that looked a lot
like the VDV II Pro - it made life VERY easy when pulling a bunch of cables
at once and then needing to identify them between patch panels and wall
sockets ;)
These days though, I just have a Pockethernet. Damned thing is fantastic.
I charge it maybe once a year. Bluetooth's to my phone, and does basically
anything you could possibly want. You can even configure vlan settings etc
so can verify voice and data vlan settings on ports with voice+data vlans
configured for VOIP phones that're configured to drop their own traffic
into a voice vlan, and then pass traffic from a data vlan out their PC
port.. Displays POE info, wiremap, Cisco CDP, and also standard LLDP
identification so it works on other vendors' switches as well. Oh, does
TDR as well. I love the thing! Probably the best thing I've ever backed
on Kickstarter. If you don't need the multiple remote probes, have a
serious gander at the Pockthernet :)

I’ve dropped mine from a decent height more than once, used it in 50 Celsius heat for hours on end and no worries at all. The only thing I do wonder about is how long the battery will last.

I use the Fluke Intellitone pro for basic pinout testing and cable locating.
Very reliable, but not particularly cheap. There is a version that has
multiple dongles for multiple outlets.
My only need with it is you have to remember to turn it off otherwise you
eat thru 9 volt batteries.
