We need to quote to a client for two routers capable of running a VPN
between two sites - easy, that's a MikroTik. But they want a fallback
to 3G/4G so that the site that falls back keeps Internet access AND so
that the VPN keeps running.
What's the state of MikroTik 3G/4G fallback? Last I looked it seemed
very roll-your-own, and supported only a few very specific dongles...
Ideally it would work like the (vastly more expensive) Merakis and just
fail everything over to the secondary link if the primary fails, where
"fail" would be either a ping test or interface down.
That said, I'm OK with a solution that needs more work, as long as once
done it is set-and-forget.
Any pointers?
Regards, K.

Good afternoon Mailing list,
I am just emailing see if anyone out there has suggestions on LTE modems
that support band 28 work well with Mikrotik devices? We are seeking to
find a mini-PCIe modem that will work on router OS 6 without needing to
do to much to get it working as well as offer existing functionalitys
like passthrough ect that we can certify and offer a cheaper solution
when compared to the Chateau.
As well as this any feedback on what devices you would like to see
support the band 28 card or any information on how the most comman
installation you would be using this device and the functionality you
would need will greatly help us in our desisions on what device/s we
would certify.
Regards Aidan :)

I’ve been using the EC 25 au successfully ( strictly for lab purposes of course as it’s not certified with any MikroTik Devices).
As far as I’m aware it’s the only modem that works well with MikroTik on Band 28.
No point setting up as PPP IMO as speed is limited to 30 Mbps.
There’s a guide I can point you to if need be to get it up and running as an LTE Interface.
It then requires AT chat commands to change the bands or to see what band you’re on.
I know that’s not the easy setup you’re looking for but as far as I’m aware it’s the best option out there.
In terms of choosing a device, if I had to restrict it to one I guess it would be the SXTLTE, perhaps the best compromise. There’s also the LTap mini, ltap and the LHT lte.
I think it’s important to either have a decent antenna built-in or to have the option for external antennas.
I’ve had zero success with pass through and have given up on it.
It’s not that much of an advantage anyway as you’re still stuck with double nat unless you go with a carrier grade sim option. Most people don’t want to spend the money on that.

> I should add the USB-CDC serial mode with PPP worked in ROS6. USB-ECM wouldn't work as a certain AT command needed to be sent. Mikrotik logged in from Latvia and checked it out but wouldn't commit to sending this command to get the ECM interface moving data properly through Mikrotik's LTE interface even though it did come up. So this was with the LE910 a few years ago, more recent firmware for the LE910 and newer xE910 modems might be better. MBIM should be fine with it but of course only on ROS7.
