Out of Band access options

Hi All, I am interested to know what people are using for OOB management access to remote sites. We have a mix of routers from TPLink to Mikrotik with 3G/4G or DSL lines into them which we then jump through to get to gear on a site, we are currently reviewing our options with a view to standardising on one brand/model if possible. Mikrotik Routerboard is a good option, but for DSL connections it needs a modem, and if using 3G/4G the modems for PCIe are a bit pricey still, just wondering what others are doing and what the most cost effective approach would be for such a little utilised component but one that is really important for remote sites. Hi all, I recently setup an HWMP+ mesh using 4 x RB951Ui at home to be used in the field. The home setup appeared to work fine but of course was an ideal setup. The units are now in the field and seemed to be working fine at the time of installation. The design of the building prevents getting cable to the units easily, hence the mesh idea. Has anyone come across this or have any ideas on how to solve? Passing default route through BGP?

Hi Guys, Our primary upstream has had a couple of small periods of complete downtime the last couple of nights, which has given me the opportunity (lol) to test our failover with our other two upstreams. Found an issue in that it looks like RouterOS doesn't pass default route through BGP? I currently have one router setup per upstream, receives a default route plus full feed (but we filter to only directly-connected (one AS hop) prefixes for each upstream) I then run IBGP between all edge routers. And also run OSPF between the four edge routers, and the core router, to send a default route to the core. My thinking was that OSPF will redistribute a default route on any edge router with an active default route (i.e. BGP is up and/or gateway IP is pingable) Which works ok, IF the upstream gateway goes down. If I remove the hardcoded default routes, then it works as expected, but leaves those routers uncontactable. I had also been expecting that the default route from each upstream was being passed on via iBGP to the other routers - to the point that I had been setting localpref on each one based on their cost and available bandwidth. On checking tonight, it seems that the 0.0.0.0/0 routes are NOT being propagated via IBGP? I can set default-originate=if-installed, which sends a default route from one peer to another, but it is not the one being received on eBGP from the usptream, as the localpref is wrong. And if I set default-originate=if-installed on the other peer, that peer stops receiving that default route. Has anyone tried this? It works fine on quagga and cisco, but doesn't appear to be working on mikrotik (which if it's correct, makes me glad I found it before I'd forked out on another three hardware routers to go alongside my CCR when it arrives back) Thanks, DG -- Damien Gardner Jnr VK2TDG. CRS125 vs CRS226

Hi everyone One of my colleagues was reading up today on the differences between the CRS125-24G-1S-RM and the CRS226-24G-2S+RM. I know the 226 supports jumbo frames and 10GB, but he noticed that it has half the RAM of the 125 and a processor with a slower clock speed. Would this be an issue in the real world? Leaving aside the price difference, is there any reason to go for the 125 over the 226? I've got several 125s both internally and at client sites, but I haven't used a 226 yet. Do you guys who have a working Mikrotik LNS have any statistics on how much traffic a Mikrotik CCR1009 or better could push? Thanks. OK, outside of the default settings you're saying there isn't much that can be done in the Data Rates, Advanced and HT tabs that might have a decent impact on speeds? The Wireless Wiki doesn't go into any depth on some of the settings. Like when to set Distance to Indoors vs Dynamic Putting values into the threshold fields - do they have any effect? What effect does the adaptive noise immunity really have? Is it better to disable b/g if you don't need it? Does putting a value in for burst time help in certain situations? When is it appropriate to enable RTS and RTS/CTS? Traffic prioritisation

Hey, I've got an RB951G-2HnD (running 6.27) on my home network, and I want to do some traffic prioritisation, because my ADSL sync maxes out at 5.5mbps. I want to: - make everything that comes from the Internet to my AppleTV high priority (Netflix :) ) - make everything to phones medium priority - make everything to my PC - which is mostly used for downloading Linux distros - low priority Without limiting the bandwidth of any of them; i.e. if nothing is going to the AppleTV, the full bandwidth should be available to my PC. If the AppleTV is wanting 3mbps, it should get all of that and the traffic to my PC should be limited to whatever's left. Is that possible? I'm not much of a networking guy, and I'm sure there are proper terms to explain what I'm wanting to achieve :) (Am I talking about QoS? Is it a queues thing?) - Ben --

COA with Freeradius and Mikrotik

Hi guys, we are making some major changes to our authentication and billing and want to implement the COA feature so that any plan changes mid cycle for customers can be pushed to the LNS. I know that Mikrotik supports COA by using the inbound radius options and it should do what we want but what I can't seem to find enough information on is how the radius server actually triggers the update to be sent to the LNS, can anybody here shine any light on that for me at all ? We really want to get this going as I hate having to kick somebody off just for their queue to change, but just can't seem to connect the dots..... Thanks Paul
