Thanks Mike. I realise it's all a bit hypothetical at the moment. As an all in one directional solution, would something like the SXT 5ac work? Yes, probably once you move beyond about 50m in the open air, a directional antenna becomes more sensible. There are many panel antenna options available for 2 and 5Ghz that will do the job. Most of them have an N-Female bulkhead antenna connector so you can attach the Groove direct if need be, by a right-angle N-to-N adapter, or by a short bit of antenna cable.
Perhaps you need to consider adding a few of each kind to your standard site-kit so you have it all handy to deploy depending on the situation you encounter?
Cheers!

I suppose the other option would be to go more directional - would you think that is necessary for a 500m range?

Hi Mike,
OK a couple of concerns here - the AP's vary greatly in brand / type so I can't be sure the antenna's will be aligned and also I've just been informed that the AP can be up to 500m away.
Would you install a bigger antenna?
Ben

Hi Ben,
That antenna will be OK over 100m so long as: - it is installed with antenna mounted vertically - the AP has a similar antenna/alignment - there are minimal obstacles/obstructions - there is low interference from other transmitters
Cheers!
Mike.

Thanks - sounds like it's the Groove all the way then.
My knowledge of antennas is pretty limited - is a 6Dbi 2.4Ghz / 8Dbi 5Ghz good for the type of setup I have outlined?

I've used the Groove 52 (the original model without 802.11ac) in a similar setup before, works very well. If you can get away with the included omni antenna, it is simply a matter of using a couple of hose clamps to mount the Groove to a pole and plugging the cable in to get up and running.
The only benefit that I can see in the board + card + enclosure + antenna solution is if you need more flexibility - eg installing a 4G card, multiple Ethernet ports, etc.

Thanks very much Mike and Ben. The Groove AC sounds ideal if it can be used as a station, is weatherproof and switchable between 2.4 and 5Ghz, it will reduce my build time too.
Are there any advantages in going for the board + card + enclosure + antenna solution that Ben is talking about?
