Updated Firmware for the Proscend 180T SFP VDSL2 Modems?
Does anyone know if there is an Updated firmware available for the Metanoia/Proscend VDSL SFP's? There is a note from NBNCo relating to them being made unusable in the next three months due to incompatibility with new features being enabled on FTTN DSLAM ports. THe note seems to suggest by 'older' firmware that maybe there is a newer firmware available? Anyone know? Would be nice if I could keep using mine :) "A Metanoia SFP device with older firmware failed to negotiate synchronization at all once SOS and ROC was enabled on the DSLAM port. RSPs with services identified with these devices (approximately 700 network wide) will be notified to coordinate an update or replacement of these devices before network SOS/ROC deployment occurs." Hi Damien, thanks for making us aware of it. I was not aware of that issue yet, and will need to investigate further. There have been a few (small number) of firmware revisions since they started to enter the AU market some years back, but not certain whether the current model/version is included in their testing... Can you offer me a link to the official notice, for reference? and/or NBNco contact point if you have any specific to this note. (if not, I'll go through our usual channels) I'll report back here once I have something useful to report ; ) Cheers! Mike. thunder.

Hello Everyone, and “CALLING ALL NBN RSPs” ; ) As you can probably imagine, we’ve been working on addressing this issue for a while now, and although making some good progress, we’ve come up against a barrier that we need some assistance from an active NBN RSP to continue to make progress toward a final solution. We have received a sample on SFP modem with prospective upgrade firmware, but before we can make a general roll-out, we need to find a way to test the module against the proposed NBN DSLAM profile. The only way that I have so far identified to have that test done is for a currently registered NBN Service Provider to conduct that testing in a similar manner to the technical testing program during the NBNCo onboarding program. Since the only way to gain access to that testing process is to be a registered or (currently onBoarding) Service Provider, we are now in the process of reaching out to registered RSPs with whom we have some prior engagement to assist in working through that testing process. IF you can represent a currently operating RSP and would like to work with us to find a resolution for this potential problem, please do reply off list at your convenience – we’d LOVE to hear from you! : ) For everyone else, please stand by and watch this space for future update! : ) (and questions, concerns, comments always welcome of course!) Hi folks, I received my first notification of this from AAPT Wholesale today, regarding a service in Geelong. Excerpt from the email; === nbn™ is implementing a SOS (Save our Showtime) and ROC (Robust Overhead Channel) upgrade of VDSL2 (FTTN/FTTB) services (*SOS/ROC Upgrade*). The purpose of the upgrade is to prevent dropouts due to sudden large noise bursts, thereby improving service stability. The SOS/ROC Upgrade is expected to commence on 1 July 2021. How Does This Affect You? The SOS/ROC Upgrade will affect customers who have deployed Metanoia or Intel chip set devices. nbn™ advises that Metanoia and Intel chip set devices will be affected as follows: • Metanoia SFP devices will fail to negotiate and cause a hard down outage; and • Intel chip set devices will become unstable, causing a higher percentage of dropouts and service instability. === It lists a single service that I have in the area (which doesn't actually have one of these SFPs on it, so somewhat unrelated to this thread), so it seems that the rollout is indeed commencing. Interestingly I have multiple VDSL services in the same area, but only this one listed in my advisory, so it seems that NBN has a way to determine which CPE devices are incompatible. What's the status of the SFP firmware update? Cheers, Tim On Wed, 19 May 2021 at 17:03, Mike Everest <mike@duxtel.com> wrote:

Hi Tim, and all. Thanks for the timely question - although there is not a great deal of hard progress (yet), I can offer some updates worth reporting :-} Already, we do have a proposed firmware upgrade available. The new firmware is 'expected' to support both existing NBN VDSL configuration profile and the proposed new configuration. Also, the new firmware s expected to continue supporting other ADSL and VDSL services in the same way that the current firmware operates. The immediate problem, however, is access to the NBN test lab so that we can confirm all these 'expectations' before we can roll out the firmware update. That next step is proving to be the biggest challenge since, as most of you are well aware, NBNCo is effectively a fortress when it comes to finding the right people to talk to. Their 'public' call centres are tuned to answer only simple questions like "how can I get connected" and "how can I get my problem addressed" where the answer is invariably the same: "contact your RSP" ; ) So we've been taking a multi-tier approach to this: 1. Cooperation with a current NBN RSP who can liaise with the appropriate NBNCo teams to access appropriate testing. We are in contact with one such RSP already, but that is still early stages of getting a dialogue with NBNCo started. And many MANY thanks to that RSP for their cooperation: You know who you are, THANK YOU! : ) 2. We have now joined the NBNCo "ICT Channel Program" that is intended to offer technology consultants and vendors a communication channel into internal NBNCo teams. Although this is somewhat promising (we HAVE been able to communicate directly with NBNCo people - who are very helpful and trying their hardest) it is still early times, and it seems that some NBNCo departments are communication fortresses in themselves even within the fortress of NBNCo! :-D 3. From my various involvements with NBNCo and general data network tech forums over the years, I have the distinct pleasure of developing some informal contacts with various folks who work in various NBN departments. Those people (THANK YOU TO THEM TOO!) have been gracious enough to help to raise awareness of my attempts to communicate with appropriate folks which has so far resulted in assurance that 'someone' will get in touch with me 'soon' to address this issue. (Though I am still waiting for that promised communication to come, I am confident that it will eventually happen :) So where we are at right now is that although we are still a way off from developing a solution to this issue, I can be quite confident that we will eventually have a new firmware to offer. HOW to apply that firmware is not yet determined, but at this stage it is likely that the modules will NOT be 'field upgradable' - that means that we think that modules will need to be returned to us (DuxTel) or to your reseller/point-of-sale for update and return. For all modules still covered under the standard 12 month warranty, there will no cost for this process. For devices that are no longer covered under standard warranty, upgrade path is still available at no cost other than appropriate freight costs. Apologies for the small essay, and sorry that I still have nothing concrete to announce, but hope that this will at least offer some assurance that the slow wheels of progress continue to turn :-} Questions (on, or off list) are welcome! Regards, Mike.

Hi Tim, I am confirming with the manufacturer if VPC 8/35 is also not supported. One would think so, as many Australian DSL networks (including NBN) use VPI=8 and VCI=35 parameters. Hi Alen, If it is indeed 8/35 that's not supported on the new firmware, and presumably any brand new SFP device would run the new firmware - I read this to mean new devices will not support Aus network. This is a huge problem for us. If it's only 8/36 that doesn't work with the new firmware, then it sounds like our immediate problem is solved. Any chance you could share a link to this firmware update tool? I could test it out on an aus nbn fttn service. Cheers, Tim On Tue, 11 May 2021 at 19:01, <alen@duxtel.com> wrote:

Hi Damian,
Thank you for your SOS/ROC DSLAM deployment report.
We have liaised with the NBNco engineer who initially identified and reported the parameters compatibility between the Proscend PS180-T VDSL2 SFP Modem (Telco CPE) and proposed AU DSLAM updates. As a result of this report, we have subsequently been in contact with Proscend (Metanoia chipset manufacturer) seeking official statement from ALL parties.
What is known so far,
NBNco to enable new SOS/ROC parameters on AU DSLAM ports Earlier firmware is not compatible with the above changes Proscend have already released firmware upgrade and tool Latest firmware supports SOS/ROC for VDSL applications Latest Proscend firmware does NOT support VPC (8/36) for AU ADSL applications
What is not known so far,
When we can expect NEW firmware, which addresses both SOS/ROC and ADSL VPC paramters Can the new firmware and tool be readily available for public release Does the new firmware still support current VPC AU ADSL paramters
We are treating NBNco's proposed DSLAM changes with the upmost importance and are working with Proscend (Metanoia - chipset manufacturer) for a timely solution.
We will keep you posted with any developments as they come to hand.
Kind regards,
Alen

Does anyone know if there is an Updated firmware available for the Metanoia/Proscend VDSL SFP's?
There is a note from NBNCo relating to them being made unusable in the next three months due to incompatibility with new features being enabled on FTTN DSLAM ports. THe note seems to suggest by 'older' firmware that maybe there is a newer firmware available? Anyone know? Would be nice if I could keep using mine :)

RSPs with services identified with these devices (approximately 700 network wide) will be notified to coordinate an update or replacement of these devices before network SOS/ROC deployment occurs."

Hi Jim (and all) That is definitely what we are working toward! : ) This week we will be upgrading a few units for some field testing, and if all goes as expected, we'll be upgrading all of our current stock and also work with our reseller partners to upgrade all inventory asap. I will keep you posted, as soon as further is known. Further questions/comments/feedback welcome. Kind regards, Alen -----Original Message----- From: Public < <mailto:public-bounces@talk.mikrotik.com.au> public-bounces@talk.mikrotik.com.au> On Behalf Of Tim

VDSL2 Modems?
Hi Damian,
Thank you for your SOS/ROC DSLAM deployment report.
We have liaised with the NBNco engineer who initially identified and
reported the parameters compatibility between the Proscend PS180-T
VDSL2 SFP Modem (Telco CPE) and proposed AU DSLAM updates. As a
result of this report, we have subsequently been in contact with
Proscend (Metanoia chipset
manufacturer) seeking official statement from ALL parties.
What is known so far,
NBNco to enable new SOS/ROC parameters on AU DSLAM ports
Earlier firmware is not compatible with the above changes
Proscend have already released firmware upgrade and tool
Latest firmware supports SOS/ROC for VDSL applications
Latest Proscend firmware does NOT support VPC (8/36) for AU
ADSL applications
What is not known so far,
When we can expect NEW firmware, which addresses both SOS/ROC
and ADSL VPC paramters
Can the new firmware and tool be readily available for public
release
Does the new firmware still support current VPC AU ADSL
paramters
We are treating NBNco's proposed DSLAM changes with the upmost
importance and are working with Proscend (Metanoia - chipset
manufacturer) for a timely solution.
We will keep you posted with any developments as they come to hand.
Kind regards,
Alen

Does anyone know if there is an Updated firmware available for the
Metanoia/Proscend VDSL SFP's?
There is a note from NBNCo relating to them being made unusable in
the next three months due to incompatibility with new features being
enabled on FTTN DSLAM ports. THe note seems to suggest by 'older'
firmware that maybe there is a newer firmware available? Anyone know?
Would be nice if I could keep using mine :)

RSPs

these devices before network SOS/ROC deployment occurs."

Hi Jim, Very good question, and I will do my best to answer. : ) At this stage, ongoing stock will continue to be manufactured and dispatched with current firmware. However, we are in the process of upgrading a handful of modules and working towards having some form of field testing data to confirm future support - post NBNco DSLAM proposed upgrades of course. We understand some 'resellers' have hundreds of units in operation and having them all upgraded in a timely manner will be a challenge. What we are working on in the background, - New firmware/tool for public release to resellers - Possibly an exchange program, upgrade units shipped & original returned - Field upgradable option, i.e., time bombed firmware updater or one-time use installer (image) Please note: we are yet to determine best upgrade path, but will keep you posted with any updates ASAP. Hi Alen,
If it is indeed 8/35 that's not supported on the new firmware, and presumably any brand new SFP device would run the new firmware - I read this to mean new devices will not support Aus network. This is a huge problem for us.
If it's only 8/36 that doesn't work with the new firmware, then it sounds like our immediate problem is solved.
Any chance you could share a link to this firmware update tool? I could test it out on an aus nbn fttn service.

Hello Matt, There was no explicit timeline offered by NBNCo as to network update roll-out other than they would offer "ample time" to RSPs to address the issue. And YES - without action on firmware of existing Proscend/Metanoia modems, it is highly probable that they will no longer sync to NBN DSLAMs after the configuration changes. If you are affected, then either contact your NBNCo rep for further detail if you are an RSP, else contact your RSP/wholesaler for further advice. We'll keep this forum updated with progress as is made... At this stage I expect that we will have a solution well ahead of the network update, but at 'this stage', that is really only an expectation rather than certainty :-} Cheers! Mike.

What is known so far, NBNco to enable new SOS/ROC parameters on AU DSLAM ports Earlier firmware is not compatible with the above changes Proscend have already released firmware upgrade and tool Latest firmware supports SOS/ROC for VDSL applications Latest Proscend firmware does NOT support VPC (8/36) for AU ADSL applications What is not known so far, When we can expect NEW firmware, which addresses both SOS/ROC and ADSL VPC paramters Can the new firmware and tool be readily available for public release Does the new firmware still support current VPC AU ADSL paramters We are treating NBNco's proposed DSLAM changes with the upmost importance and are working with Proscend (Metanoia - chipset manufacturer) for a timely solution. Hello Matt,
There was no explicit timeline offered by NBNCo as to network update roll-out other than they would offer "ample time" to RSPs to address the issue.
We'll keep this forum updated with progress as is made... At this stage I expect that we will have a solution well ahead of the network update, but at 'this stage', that is really only an expectation rather than certainty :-}
Cheers!
Mike.

this one just caught my eye. Do we have any timeline for when NBNco will be upgrading their DSLAM's and am i reading this correctly that after the upgrade the Modems will no longer operate.
Matt
Hi Jim,
Very good question, and I will do my best to answer. : )
At this stage, ongoing stock will continue to be manufactured and dispatched with current firmware.
However, we are in the process of upgrading a handful of modules and working towards having some form of field testing data to confirm future support - post NBNco DSLAM proposed upgrades of course.
We understand some 'resellers' have hundreds of units in operation and having them all upgraded in a timely manner will be a challenge.
What we are working on in the background, - New firmware/tool for public release to resellers - Possibly an exchange program, upgrade units shipped & original returned - Field upgradable option, i.e., time bombed firmware updater or one-time use installer (image)
Please note: we are yet to determine best upgrade path, but will keep you posted with any updates ASAP.
Thanks,
Alen

Sorry that was more of a Duxtel specific question, you obviously cant speak for any other suppliers or sources :)

Hi Alen,
Would it be fair to say that any future purchases of the Proscend 180T SFP's will come with the new/current firmware applied prior to shipping?
Kind Regards,
Jim.

Hi Tim,
Update!
I have liaised with the manufacturer and they suggest the new firmware does support PVC (8/35) for ADSL.
Unfortunately, we are not permitted to share firmware and tool for public access - yet.
Kind regards,
Alen

Hi Alen,
If it is indeed 8/35 that's not supported on the new firmware, and presumably any brand new SFP device would run the new firmware - I read this to mean new devices will not support Aus network. This is a huge problem for us.
If it's only 8/36 that doesn't work with the new firmware, then it sounds like our immediate problem is solved.
Any chance you could share a link to this firmware update tool? I could test it out on an aus nbn fttn service.
Cheers,
Tim
