Hi guys, has anybody used the new RBSXTG-5HPacD radios as yet and have any comments ? We have a couple of short P2P links we were looking at doing, about 1km - 3km, there is a bit of 5Ghz stuff already in the areas and was wondering how these handle a bit of interference, we only need 100M but was thinking about trying the new 802.11ac gear when Duxtel gets some in stock. Regards Paul
Hi Paul, They haven't hit the ground yet! I ordered a couple of cartons of each product as soon as they were announced - that was at least 4 weeks ago - and they are only JUST in transit right now. They are due to arrive around middle of next week. First up, the SXT models (CPE and AP product) are arriving next week, then the 'netbox' product is not arriving until the following week! ;) As soon as I can lay my hands on some, I'll run some tests and see what can be done. We also have a 'real world' test lined up thanks for Andrew (also on this list) using one for a melbournewireless link. I'm expecting some honest assessment from Andrew - and will post the results here (if he doesn't do it himself! ;-) Cheers, Mike.

Hi guys, I'm the Andrew that Mike mentioned below. Our real-world test link is around 12km between two Geelong based MelbourneWireless nodes, and will consist of a netbox + sector AP, with an SXT as a station as soon as I can get my hands on them. We've historically used mainly Ubiquiti radios with Mikrotik boxes on routing duty, but I'm very keen to see how these 802.11ac Mikrotik radios perform, as having the full RouterOS feature set on our radios would be very handy. Cheers, Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: Public [mailto:public-bounces@talk.mikrotik.com.au] On Behalf Of Mike Everest Sent: Thursday, 24 July 2014 3:58 PM To: 'MikroTik Australia Public List' Subject: Re: [MT-AU Public] 802.11ac SXT's Hi Paul, They haven't hit the ground yet! This is something I have been a bit concerned about to be honest, I'm sure that Andrew and most people on this list are careful in their use of bandwidth, I know that wherever we can we use 5Ghz spectrum to save $$$, but only if it's reasonably quiet or a short hop, so once you can suck up 80mhz of spectrum it leaves things tight even for yourself if there is some colocation in the same location needed. Another option I have been considering is 24Ghz gear, whilst only good for short distances the capacity is there and with the ability to be able to run 4 radios within 360 degrees it's a viable option for short links in congested areas. I would be keen to see how these new radios go though, I think we would have a number of customers using them just as AP's in the office at least. Hi Paul, 24GHz is only useful for very short distances in Australia due to very low EIRP limits - generally, no more than 1km for full speeds. Beyond about 2-3Km, 5GHz will deliver generally better throughput than 24G equipment. Regarding indoor 802.11ac, MikroTik are yet to release any 5GHz indoor AP models let alone ac versions :-( Maybe they have been holding off on releasing 5GHz indoor models until ac was ready, and so maybe they are due for imminent release... I'm not holding my breath waiting though :-D Cheers, Mike. that

We also have a 'real world' test lined up thanks for Andrew (also on this list) using one for a melbournewireless link. I'm expecting some honest assessment from Andrew - and will post the results here (if he doesn't do it himself! ;-)
Cheers, Mike.

Hi guys, has anybody used the new RBSXTG-5HPacD radios as yet and have
any comments ?
We have a couple of short P2P links we were looking at doing, about
1km - 3km, there is a bit of 5Ghz stuff already in the areas and was
wondering
how
these handle a bit of interference, we only need 100M but was thinking
about
trying the new 802.11ac gear when Duxtel gets some in stock.
Regards
Paul

HI Mike, yes correct. 1-3km realistically, testing on the Ubiquiti Air Fiber 24 has shown about 700M full duplex at 2.5km which isn't too shabby for short hops. Mikrotik have advertised card support in the RB900 and RB800 boards though, so options are starting to happen. It would be good to see some proper indoor models though, I'm sure that will come soon. I'm not holding my breath waiting though :-D Cheers, Mike. that
Andrew and most people on this list are careful in their use of bandwidth, I know that wherever we can we use 5Ghz spectrum to save $$$, but only if it's reasonably quiet or a short hop, so once you can suck up 80mhz of spectrum it leaves things tight even for yourself if there is some colocation in the same location needed.

We do have a couple of closer options for testing if the SXT doesn't cut it over that distance without being too noisy.
Otherwise it may be a good excuse for me to purchase another netbox to go with a 29dbi dish antenna I've been looking to repurpose somewhere... :)
Cheers, Andrew.

12km? Not so sure that SXT has sufficient antenna to give you anything useful over that distance :(
Don't be tempted to run them over limit now, will you! :-}
Since 802.11ac allows for 80MHz channel width, last thing we want to do is blow away usability of 5GHz spectrum in the area! ;-)
Cheers!
Mike.

Hi guys,
I'm the Andrew that Mike mentioned below.
Cheers,
Andrew.

Hi Paul,
They haven't hit the ground yet! I ordered a couple of cartons of each product as soon as they were announced - that was at least 4 weeks ago - and they are only JUST in transit right now. They are due to arrive around middle of next week.

Hi All. As my fleet continues to grow I am just wondering if anyone has a central management solution for the RB platform. The Dude is really poor to be honest and wondering if anyone has something else? Thoughts? Daniel
Daniel, all, Although it definitely has its limitations, I like the Dude because it is relatively simple, small, and generally effective for what I need it for. We certainly don't have a /large/ network to manage, though, comprising probably less than 50 monitored devices. What kind of extra/different functionality are you after, and what limitations of dude are causing you the most grief? Have you tried any other solutions yet? Cactii and Nagios are the usual favourites! Cheers, Mike.

Its not so much the monitoring/reporting/alerting. Cacti/Nagios and PRTG cover all that off. Looking for more configuration things, for example one place my level 1 guys can log into to see read-only configs in the field. Configuration Backups. Even possibly the ability to push some config changes from a central hub. Running a lot of open source bits here and there (cacti/nagios/rancid) but in the end, everything comes back to relying on a windows machine and winbox eventually. I've recently started using iTop for configuration management, and I take the URL of each device and put it in a QR code on a sticker on the device, so if I send a tech onsite they can look up the config detail. We still have to manually enter that information into iTop though. I plan on scripting some of it (eg, query a device to get all it's ports and MAC addresses) but haven't got very far yet. If someone was interested in developing something like you describe, perhaps this might be a good starting point? For reference; we've worked out you can run up to 2500~ service probes on a windows based install of the dude before you start seeing odd issues/rolling fluctuations and timeouts on probes. If you're willing to increase the timeouts to 5 minutes; reduce ICMP probes and set your timeout threshold to 3 failed probes you can get up to 4000~ service probes running with reduced accuracy. As for alternatives: - OpenNMS - PRTG - Nagios - Cacti - Solarwinds - Observium Hope this helps! Cheers, Andrew On 4 August 2014 14:25, Mike Everest <mike@duxtel.com> wrote:
