Hi All, we are just about to deploy some routerboards with Intel NUC and 4G Modems for OOB units. As the units will mostly be installed in MDF rooms we need to boost the signal in a number of locations. Does anybody have any real world experience with any reasonably compact antennas that could be mounted on the outside of a rack which will improve the 4G signal fairly significantly ? We will be connecting them to the Sierra Wireless 320U USB dongles which have two antenna connectors so it will have to be compatible with that. I would appreciate any suggestions Thanks Paul
Given the situation I'd avoid the dinky little rubber antennas with magnetic bases and try put in something with decent size and gain. The MDFs are likely to be in brick and concrete clad voids in the building equivalent of an appendix. Try something like these high gain omnis. http://www.glynstore.com/ead-fgo-2g-3g-4g-lte-high-gain-penta-band-antenna/ On 7 March 2016 at 08:39, Paul Julian <paul@oxygennetworks.com.au> wrote:

Hi, we did exactly the same thing, unfortunately we didn't see much if any measurable difference. I would recommend the new SXT mounted externally which is the path we will take once we receive our unit from Duxtel's first order. That's probably a good idea. Chances are you can find a Cat5 path from the MDF to where you can put a Mikrotik unit with an LTE module/dongle in it to get a much better signal than trying to bore holes for antenna cables to mount externally. Problem is we already have the modem/dongles so I really need to work with that unfortunately. A problem with doing what you are thinking is that the higher gain, the less "beam-width" thus more directional an antenna becomes (or, perhaps the opposite: more directional you make it, the higher the gain becomes ;) So inside an enclosed space, where there is probably not any particular direction than any other, you will probably do just as well with a 1 dBi perfect dipole antenna than anything else anyhow :-} The only way to improve the signal is to either: - find a spot inside the room that has the best signal (in which case any ducky antenna will do) or - run a cable to somewhere (close) where you can mount a directional antenna pointed at the tower In both cases, remember that you generally lose 1dB for every m of antenna cable run! ;) Maybe option 1 is the best bet? Just take a short length of cable and attach it to a few different spots on the rack, then choose the spot that gives you best signal and stick it on with gaffa tape! :-) Cheers! Mike. the

Why don’t you just plug the 320U into the NUC?
