Hi guys, just wondering if anybody has used the Routerboard mAP2n with a USB dongle for 3G/4G access ? We are looking at some out of band options for some remote sites and also a way to identify if there has been a power problem on site, so thinking that these things are pretty cheap and we can configure them as an out of band router which plugs into the mains power rather than UPS, that way if we see it drop we know we are running on UPS and if our other gear fails for any reason we can get in remotely using the unit as long as the mains power is working. The other option I am considering is the hAP-2nD which has the advantage of additional ports which I can connect to different devices on site if need be. Both units are the same price. Any thoughts ?? Regards Paul
One thing we do with remote routerbords is we use them on readily available alarm / video surveillance type power supply's. Essentially a charger and gel cell 12 volt Battery and metal wall mount box. You can write a simple script that monitors the power supply voltage. Mostly these type of units charge at 13.8 volts if the voltage drops to 12 volts or bellow they are on the gel cell. We even have one of the new 12v ccr's running that way. Works nicely. Hi Paul, That's an interesting way to monitor power availability! :-D Did you consider using a RouterBoard with serial port and UPS routerOS module installed? In any case, I can't think of any reason that mAP would work any different tyo other routers as fas as USB modem support goes. And for other devices, there are a few USB modems that are known to work OK (and some known to work well ;) but they do tend to take a bit of tweaking to get them running properly... Cheer! Yes, it works well and I just did one of these yesterday on an RB2011 (I know not same as yours, but routerboard is routerboard, right?). You may have to play with the data and control channels though. Hi Paul I've used them on the Map2n - same as any other routerboard/mikrotik really however they require the micro usb to normal usb cable which is clumsy at the best of times. I don't know if I've done it on a hap (so much Mikrotik gear here) Things to remember: You can use POE in as well as DC in (Dual power supply - on some you can monitor the dc voltage - if it's 0v then you know you have a drop but are still running on POE) You can plug in a USB HUB In this hub you can plug your USB ups in or your RS232 adaptor into your ups as well as your dongle The UPS package will tell you if it's on battery or not (we use it for ups monitoring for the smaller ups's that don't come with network) You can script up a SMS straight from the Mikrotik on an alert - like a power on/off event on the ups. (I'm about to start working on this) You also have SNMP at your disposal Any of the serial ports on the other models you can change from console to a serial port. I'd go the hAP purely from the perspective of having a normal size USB port. - I haven't tested them with both POE and PS Pack. But yes they are awesome and cheap, I use them for 3/4G failover if we lose fibre/xdsl/eoc as well as OOB at the DC's and as a serial host for switches/ups's James -----Original Message----- From: Public [mailto:public-bounces@talk.mikrotik.com.au] On Behalf Of Paul Julian Sent: Monday, 31 August 2015 5:54 PM To: public@talk.mikrotik.com.au Subject: [MT-AU Public] 3G/4G on mAP2n or hAP-2nD Hi guys, just wondering if anybody has used the Routerboard mAP2n with a USB dongle for 3G/4G access ? Thanks guys, all good information and appreciate the responses. Good idea about using the dual power feed ! We use UPS's from a company called PSS, they are cheap and work well, but the Mikrotiks seem to only support APC stuff otherwise I would just probe the UPS for power availability, but I figure I really need an OOB option as well as some sites we can't get into after hours if we have a problem, and then buildings have scheduled outages which they never tell the carriers in their building about of course, so it would be great to be able to know when our equipment is going to go down due to an actual proper power outage and not just lose access because a fibre or wireless link has dropped. In some cases I would also like the option of a second Ethernet connection or ADSL connection for some basic redundancy, something I couldn't do with 3G/4G, and that's where I thought the hAP come in because it had a couple of Ethernet ports and could do pretty much everything the mAP could do for the same price. I've done the same with RB751 units at a few sites which has worked well. Another option is to get something like an RB750 which is connected direct to mains power, and if that drops (assuming the rest of your gear is up) you will know that the mains has failed. -----Original Message----- From: Public [mailto:public-bounces@talk.mikrotik.com.au] On Behalf Of Paul Julian Sent: Monday, 31 August 2015 5:54 PM To: public@talk.mikrotik.com.au Subject: [MT-AU Public] 3G/4G on mAP2n or hAP-2nD Hi guys, just wondering if anybody has used the Routerboard mAP2n with a USB dongle for 3G/4G access ?
