Hey all, Just had a bunch of my CCRs crashing within a few minutes of each other around 10:00am, the only ones which didn’t crash were ones not running NTP. Just curious if this has happened to anyone else today or for people not on a CCR? Kyle.

Im having some buffer bloat issues on CCR's due to the increased latency of southern cross being out. But even the cisco's are suffering a bit also. No Crash's restart's however on the CCR's matt On 1/07/2015 11:45 am, Andrew Gilbett wrote:

It seems a bit weird that an embedded device like this doesn't have some sort of hardware watchdog timer in it, especially seeing as they are often being deployed remotely. A software watchdog isn't quite as robust. On 1 July 2015 at 11:50, Matt Perkins <matt@spectrum.com.au> wrote:

Hi, It wasn't just you! ;-) It also happened to just one (of many) of ours - CCR1009 rOS6.28 Fortunately, it was the one in our rack right downstairs - so easy to access and power cycle. Would be real bad if it happened on one of the others, since it was well and truly hung... only power cycle would recover it :( Cheers!

Good question! This one uses script to pick a new NTP server from pool.ntp.org every week - so I don't have a record of what it had configured when it went to sleep :-} Although it's not exactly a mission critical router, this event is probably a good lesson that I should find some alternative method to keep track of time ;) Cheers! There's an idea - sierra MC series 3G and LTE modems also have GPS output accessible to routerOS... I reckon it should be possible to script a clock update based on that GPS data....? Cheers!

It wasn't just you! ;-)
It also happened to just one (of many) of ours - CCR1009 rOS6.28
Fortunately, it was the one in our rack right downstairs - so easy to access and power cycle. Would be real bad if it happened on one of the others, since it was well and truly hung... only power cycle would recover it :( Cheers!

Without seeing the AT command set to pull the GPS data off, just be wary that when you parse the time (and location if need be) data that you only do so when the signal is valid/not-void. When the GPS isn't locked it's time tends to be free running or plain wrong. I made a GPS based NTP server for AAHL in Geelong once that used the GPSD/NTPD combo with PPS on the serial port for their secure LAN - it worked very well. I have had no issues with the SNTP Client on Microtik boxes getting their time off Windows Server either. On 1 July 2015 at 15:14, Mike Everest <mike@duxtel.com> wrote:
There's an idea - sierra MC series 3G and LTE modems also have GPS output accessible to routerOS...
I reckon it should be possible to script a clock update based on that GPS data....?
Cheers!

You can get GPS based stratum-1 clock (commercial types) which are not at atomic clock prices but do a very good job. I think I remember seeing a Pi based roll your own GPS Stratum-1

Yes, but *it* will need to get sync from somewhere else too ;)
I think I need my own atomic clock! :-D

Mike,
Perhaps a Raspberry Pi would be suitable for acting as an NTP server running NTPD or OpenNTPD. Cheap and cheerful!

Good question!
This one uses script to pick a new NTP server from pool.ntp.org every week - so I don't have a record of what it had configured when it went to sleep :-}
Although it's not exactly a mission critical router, this event is probably a good lesson that I should find some alternative method to keep track of time ;)
Cheers!
Mike.

Hi Mike, What version of NTP is it talking to. I have just looked at 8 CCR's all up and running but all say
At the same timeing. Nothing froze however all going strong. (so far) we are running 4.2.2 on our NTP server.

Good point - AND I guess it would also need to take into account a few ms of processing time too, perhaps? (i.e. time taken from read of data, to parse it and update the clock - probably not a great deal of time involved, but if the clock needs to be accurate to a fraction of ms, then it might be significant?) Also thanks - now I have a good use for my windows hardware :-D Cheers!

I had a CCR1009 on 6.22 with NTP crash & reboot, and another crash & require a manual power cycle. Plenty of other models (RB1100s and RB2011s) that didn't crash. On 1/07/2015 1:57 p.m., Mike Everest wrote:

Hey all,
Just had a bunch of my CCRs crashing within a few minutes of each other around 10:00am, the only ones which didn’t crash were ones not running NTP.
Just curious if this has happened to anyone else today or for people not on a CCR?
