      I have the big brother of this one - fluke microscanner 2 - it has the 7 dongles and will tell you where the fault in the cable is and I'm which pair /pin.

One thing it doesn't do is any network negotiation past layer 1, it'll tell you there's a switch and it's 10/100/1000 and poe, but nothing like CDP or DHCP detection.

Horses for courses though, mine is targeted to cable jockeys, rather than network engineers.

I use the Fluke Intellitone pro for basic pinout testing and cable locating.

Very reliable, but not particularly cheap. There is a version that has
multiple dongles for multiple outlets.

My only need with it is you have to remember to turn it off otherwise you
eat thru 9 volt batteries.

So Pockethernet seems like a good option, all the features of the Ideal
Networks VDV II Pro and maybe more? Around $350 instead of $800 ish. People
have mentioned build quality, has anyone had issues with them breaking?

Hello Folks,
Looking for some advice for a lan cable tester. What are you all using?
Typical jobs for me are home, small business and pubs. Setting up basic MK
lans and wlans. I use electricians with cable certification testers
wherever possible to lay new cable or replace faulty ones when needed.
I want it to be able to:
1. Check for continuity between 2 data points and get some basic
troubleshooting info on faulty cables.
2. survive POE voltage.
2. Be under $500, ideally less if possible.
3. Nice to have but not essential: 3 or so remote units so I can test a
few data points at once
My pick at this point is the Ideal Network VDV II Plus for around $330.
Options I?ve found so far:
Ideal networks
VDV II, VDV II Plus and VDV II Pro for $184, $327 and $527
Aegis has:
Pinga Network IP Test Tool for $295
LAN Tester RJ45 for $110
LAN Tester - RJ45, Coax, Tone $160

Back when I was cabling for a living, I had a nice unit that looked a lot
like the VDV II Pro - it made life VERY easy when pulling a bunch of cables
at once and then needing to identify them between patch panels and wall
sockets ;)
These days though, I just have a Pockethernet. Damned thing is fantastic.
I charge it maybe once a year. Bluetooth's to my phone, and does basically
anything you could possibly want. You can even configure vlan settings etc
so can verify voice and data vlan settings on ports with voice+data vlans
configured for VOIP phones that're configured to drop their own traffic
into a voice vlan, and then pass traffic from a data vlan out their PC
port.. Displays POE info, wiremap, Cisco CDP, and also standard LLDP
identification so it works on other vendors' switches as well. Oh, does
TDR as well. I love the thing! Probably the best thing I've ever backed
on Kickstarter. If you don't need the multiple remote probes, have a
serious gander at the Pockthernet :)

quality the wiremap/loopback terminator mine was crap from the start.
I can not see how to buy them from the website.

Yeah true, It could be made more professionally.. it looks a bit iffy...
