MikroTik User Meeting (MUM) in Australia?
Hello everyone! Since the last official MUM event to be scheduled (Prague, Czech Republic, March 2020) was cancelled in 2020 due to the arrival of COVID, MikroTik have stated that they have 'temporarily' ceased running MUM events in favour of concentrating on their YouTube channel production. So far, there continues to be no MUM event planning for the foreseeable future. Having attended all 4 MUM events in Australia to date, as well as several international MUM events, I've been greatly missing the opportunity to hear from our MikroTik peers around Australia and the world, and to mix with all my favourite MikroTik folks (you know who you are! ; ) and to meet new MikroTik converts, enthusiasts and pros. So I've been thinking about the concept of running our own MikroTik event sometime later this year or during first part of 2025, and interested to hear opinions from everyone out there in MikroTik-Land about whether such a thing is worth exploring further.. I've thrown together a quick survey aimed at getting a feel for whether there might be sufficient interest to run such an event, and (of course) how much it would cost us to run it! ; ) I'm hopeful that I could waylay about 5 minutes of your time to respond to these questions - EVEN IF you have zero interest in attending (that is just as useful information as any!) I'll happily report back here on a summary of responses :-} Here's the survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TJ9LJCQ Thanks in advance, and hope we can get something up and running and see you all there! : ) Cheers, Mike.

There were heaps of places where I wanted to answer "it depends". For example the swag and the catering. If it's first-class catering I'm ready to pay for that, but if it's sausage rolls and tomato sauce, then not. Same for swag - if there is really good stuff on offer I'm not stupid enough to think it should be free, but if it's yet another ball- point pen and a notebook in a shoulder bag stuffed with brochures, then... Also, location. I'll go to Canberra (3.5 hours easy drive), but Sydney? 5 hours flying including intrusive security or 7-9 hours driving with super-expensive parking and accommodation when I get there; travel + accommodation double or triple the conference cost. Not a complaint; the advantages of capital cities are obvious. But they really do not serve everyone. And even their residents might quite like to get out of the big city for a while. There is interest value in being somewhere different. Thanks Karl! All feedback is great feedback : ) To clarify a bit, if it does, the purpose of splitting up those 'swag' and 'catering' like that is to try to figure out what value folks place on those things. That is - what we can afford to put into the swag, and what level of catering can we offer. So it's sort of the reverse of what you are thinking - if everyone says they would pay extra $150 for catering, then we could include a sit-down lunch, but if they only value it at 10 bucks, then yeah, sausage rolls and mini-franks :-D To be up-front about it, we have done all of the organising for the previous MUMs in AU, and always it ended up as a net cost - but ALWAYS worth doing (and spending) for the great results all up : ) If we get this up, I fully expect it to run at a bare break even at best, or if we end up spending a few $k on it, then also a good result : ) At this time, it is still early days - I have not discussed it with MikroTik people yet, but have a meeting with our account manager next week and want to be able to give them some numbers when I do. To do it 'properly', we absolutely need at least one of them to attend in person - by live video feed as a poor second choice. So fat, I'm totally floored by the response so far - it is already looking like a potential goer : ) But more data is always helpful - if folks pass the link around and encourage as many to respond as we can, it will only increase the chances of a great outcome! : ) Cheers, Mike. -----Original Message----- From: Public <public-bounces@talk.mikrotik.com.au> On Behalf Of Karl Auer via Public Sent: Monday, 25 March 2024 5:59 PM To: MikroTik Australia Public List <public@talk.mikrotik.com.au> Cc: Karl Auer <kauer@nullarbor.com.au> Subject: Re: [MT-AU Public] MikroTik User Meeting (MUM) in Australia? I tend to agree with these points. It's a shame there's not so many options to get to Yulara (Uluṟu) - it used to be a great option for meetings because it's central for everyone. But if you wanted to hold it there in the middle of school holidays I'd use it as an excuse for a road trip and bring the family. As to whether I can come - depends on how long I'm gone for and whether I'm needed to get the kids to school. If it's a Saturday, I could fly out Friday after dropping them off, get someone else to pick them up and be back on Sunday. Week days are more tricky but not impossible. -----Original Message----- From: Public <public-bounces@talk.mikrotik.com.au> On Behalf Of Karl Auer via Public Sent: Monday, March 25, 2024 2:59 PM To: MikroTik Australia Public List <public@talk.mikrotik.com.au> Cc: Karl Auer <kauer@nullarbor.com.au> Subject: Re: [MT-AU Public] MikroTik User Meeting (MUM) in Australia? Hi, Sydney/Brisbale is a real pain from Perth. Adelaide/Melbourne is much more manageable from Perth, and not too painful for the "Eastern Staters" My 2c worth. But everyone will have different parameters depending on their location. My 2c would be to try and run this either side of AusNOG. Most people would be travelling anyway. -----Original Message----- From: Public <public-bounces@talk.mikrotik.com.au> On Behalf Of Mike Everest via Public Sent: Monday, March 25, 2024 3:37 PM To: 'MikroTik Australia Public List' <public@talk.mikrotik.com.au> Cc: Mike Everest <mike@duxtel.com> Subject: [MT-AU Public] MikroTik User Meeting (MUM) in Australia? That's probably not a great time this year, APNIC 58 is on the tail end of AusNOG 2024. A lot of people who normally attend APNIC conferences won't be there because of the clash. - Christopher Hawker ________________________________ From: Public <public-bounces@talk.mikrotik.com.au> on behalf of Tim Warnock via Public <public@talk.mikrotik.com.au> Sent: Monday, March 25, 2024 7:59 PM To: 'MikroTik Australia Public List' <public@talk.mikrotik.com.au> Cc: Tim Warnock <timoid@timoid.org> Subject: Re: [MT-AU Public] MikroTik User Meeting (MUM) in Australia?
